Lionel Messi: Real Madrid HAPPY Barcelona star fired Argentina into 2018 World Cup

Messi hit a sublime hat-trick to fire Argentina through, after months of uncertainty over whether they would make the showpiece next year.

The 30-year-old exploits for his country mean that one of the best players in world football will strut his stuff in Russia after all.

And Spanish outlet Don Balon surprisingly claims that Real Madrid are actually happy that he will be at the World Cup after all.

As expected, their logic is down to the fact they feel that, with a World Cup in mind, the Argentina international’s form could wane as the season goes on.

Barcelona are currently soaring in La Liga having won all seven of their league games.

Many expected Ernesto Valverde to struggle following Neymar’s departure to Pais Saint-Germain but, with Messi to the fore, that has not been the case.

Don Balon say that, with his place in next year’s showpiece booked, Barcelona think Messi will continue to exhibit his class.

However, Real supposedly think different.

It is said they feel that, after Christmas, he may ease up in order to avoid missing out on the tournament through injury.

At 30, it is seemingly the player’s last chance to win the golden gong.

In 2006 and 2010 respectively, the forward tasted heartbreak with Germany beating Argentina in the quarter-finals of both tournaments.

And, three years ago in Brazil, Joachim Lowe’s side also hurt Messi by winning the final courtesy of Mario Gotze’s extra-time strike.

Real think the Barcelona star will be worried about missing out on one last crack at the prize and that could boost their La Liga hopes as a result.

Meanwhile, Messi’s team-mate for club and country Javier Mascherano praised the forward after his fine display last night.

“Lionel Messi owns this game and when you own the game you have ability to make things happen,” the former Liverpool star said.

“I hope we can help him in Russia. We enjoyed him and now we have to help him.

“We have the chance to dream. It’s a World Cup and we can remember how we played in Brazil.

“We have to prepare in these seven or eight months to arrive in the best form possible, and we’ll try to do it.”
