Melania Trump defies critics as she confirms move to the White House with son Barron

The First Lady and her son have so far remained in Trump Tower in New York since Donald took over the Presidency in January.

Melania has attracted criticism for so far resisting a move to Washington, but she has always maintained that she would leave New York once Barron, 11, finished at his current school.

He will attend St Andrew’s Episcopal school, a private preparatory school in Potomac, Maryland, after completing fifth grade at Columbia Grammar and Preparatory in Manhattan, a White House spokeswoman said.

In a statement, Melania said she chose the school because “it is known for its diverse community and commitment to academic excellence”.

She continued: “The mission of St Andrew’s is ‘to know and inspire each child in an inclusive community dedicated to exceptional teaching, learning, and service’, all of which appealed to our family. We look forward to the coming school years at St Andrew’s.”

The school was founded in 1978 and describes itself as an “independent, coeducational college preparatory school”.

It educates 580 students from preschool up to 12th grade and boasts a college enrollment rate of 100 per cent.

Annual tuition for students in grades six to eight is $38,590 (£29,845), according to the school’s website.

It is thought Barron will be the first presidential child to attend the school, which is around 20 miles from the White House in suburban Maryland.

The Obama’s followed on from the Clintons, Nixons and Roosevelts by sending their daughters to Sidwell Friends school, a private Quaker-run academy.

St Andrew’s does have a  religious affiliation but claims on its website the school does not wish to “‘make Episcopalians’ out of our students”.

Instead, the website says the school teaches “respect for other religious traditions and even for those periods of life when a person is not identified with a particular tradition”.

Barron’s move will mark the first time a first son has lived at the White House since John F Kennedy was president.

The White House has not confirmed a moving day yet but the school year begins on 5th September. The news comes as it was revealed Melania will have a statue erected in her honour – but there is a catch.

Trump’s daughter Tiffany also announced she would be joining the rest of the family in Washington shortly.

The youngest daughter of Trump, and his only child with second wife Maria Maples, will attend law school at Georgetown in autumn.
