Range Rovers top target for car thefts in Scotland

The brand’s Sport and Evoque models have been the most popular choices for criminals during the past year.

Another attractive make for thieves is BMW, with their M3 and M5 vehicles being taken to order.

Research carried out by TRACKER, the stolen vehicle recovery (SVR) specialist, said Edinburgh and Glasgow were the hotspots for car theft.

The priciest car stolen in Scotland and recovered thanks to  TRACKER was a £195,000 Bentley Arnage, which was taken from the centre of Glasgow and located in Bothwell, Lanarkshire.

However, it was not just urban areas of the country which have been affected as rural crime hot spots for quad bike thefts were found in the Borders as well as Perth and Kinross.

Heavy plant thefts were a particular problem in Lanarkshire, with mini-diggers and towable generators being big draws for thieves.

TRACKER’s figures also show that motorhomes and caravans were also targeted across Scotland and those put in storage over the winter months were particularly vulnerable.

Andy Barrs, head of police liaison at TRACKER, said: “Our figures show that thieves don’t just target the city and they don’t always go for the expensive brands.

“The message is that all vehicle owners need to focus on security and TRACKER’s SVR technology can help.

“Whilst installing an SVR device won’t stop a vehicle being stolen, it does significantly increase the chances of police locating and recovering a vehicle that has been taken by criminals. If you don’t want to lose it, track it.”
